Stepping into the wonders of March
This year, the chatter is about how quickly February has zipped by, despite having an extra day. How is it that January drags on, yet February flies, when it really is only the case of 2 days difference. Never mind, the daffodils followed the snowdrops and where we live, the Irish seem to be hearty planters of those yellow trumpets. A few blossoms appeared in late February and then it blizzarded snow for a day (in some parts of the land) on the 1st March, heralding Spring with a mocking laugh.
That snow day was joyfully practical in our house, as it meant that the planned sporting event on Saturday was postponed, giving my son (who is recovering from a mild concussion) another week to prepare.
Meanwhile, I lit the fire and tapped on my computer, promising myself that I would get out for a nice long walk before dark….
With each new month I take out my book Half Light Half Dark and transcribe all the important events to the wall calendar in the kitchen, and I plan any seasonal do-not-forget-to-do items.
As the winter chill gradually fades away, March brings a sense of renewal and anticipation. In Ireland, this is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the outdoors and create some romantic memories.
With that in mind, here are my ideas of things to do and those all important days to remember.
Visit Irish Castles
Ireland is renowned for its majestic castles, and March provides the perfect opportunity to explore these historic landmarks. Wander hand in hand through the ancient halls of Bunratty Castle, marvel at the romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle, or take a boat trip to the enchanting Kylemore Abbey. These architectural gems offer a glimpse into Ireland's rich history and provide a dreamy backdrop for a romantic escape.
Gardening Delights
March marks the beginning of the gardening season in Ireland. Whether you have a green thumb or simply appreciate the beauty of flowers, this is the time to indulge in gardening activities. Visit the stunning gardens of Powerscourt Estate, witness the vibrant colors at Mount Stewart, or explore the romantic walled gardens of Glenveagh Castle. Be inspired by the blooming flora and embrace the joy of nature's awakening. This is the time that I start my annual sweet peas and the window sills become consumed with seed trays.
