HOUSE - Powerscourt House, Wicklow
Powerscourt Estate in Co. Wicklow, voted in the top 10 houses in the world by the Lonely Planet and 3rd garden in the world by the National Geographic sits in the magnificent Wicklow mountains just south of Dublin in Ireland.
The current design of the house is owed to the 1st Viscount Powerscourt who transformed the medieval castle standing on the grounds into a Palladian mansion in the 18th century. In it's time and to this day, Powerscourt House has one of the most beautiful designs and interiors in Ireland.
Now the house is a major tourist attraction with a visit of the gardens being a highlight. The miniature world of Tara's Palace is a delight for children. Avoca have a large shop and café inside the house for browsing. Upstairs there is a wonderful collection of Irish design and craft in The Design Loft. For gardeners, once inspired by the stunning Powerscourt landscaped gardens, the Garden Pavilion will fulfill your dreams.
If you hop back into your car and drive a few minutes up the road (well signposted) the Powerscourt Waterfall is Ireland's highest waterfall (121m high) and a wonderful spot for picnics and clambering on rocks.
Powerscourt Estate has a breath taking view over the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain in the Wicklow Hills.
You can visit the house and shops for free, but the gardens, waterfall and miniature world of Tara's Palace have small entry fees. Dogs are welcome on leads.
I have visited many times growing up in Ireland and now with my own family visiting Powerscourt is a great day out from home in Co. Meath. It is easily accessible from Dublin, Meath, Wicklow and surrounding counties and should be added to your list of things to do in Ireland!
