January 2023 - ideas and events

New Years Day 2023

There is a sense of camaraderie in the air as we take a walk on the 1st of January. Dog walkers call out “a happy new year to you” merrily as they trudge along the slightly soggy roadside. My friend and I discuss in depth what our ‘word of the year’ will be, taking into account our weakness and strengths carried over from 2022.

We share three dreams that we want to make true in the coming twelve months. With ruby cheeks we arrive at my bungalow for tea and leftover leftover Christmas cake.

Other months blend together but January arrives with the pop of fireworks and champagne corks. I feel the anticipation of a gradual change towards the coming months of light.

In Ireland, it is still mild and damp, a tad grey too, but ripe for self-care, cake and dream doodling.

Days to Celebrate in January 2023

1st - New Years Day, a time to rest, plan and dream

4th - Quadrantid meteor shower - this reaches its peak on this day. If you take a blanket and sit outside you may be lucky enough to see up to 25 meteors an hour.

6th - Little Christmas or Nollaig na mBan - a chance to invite girlfriends over to indulge in twelfth night cake and some prosecco.

6th - Full Wolf moon rises

18th - Winnie the Pooh day. Enjoy a game of pooh sticks from a bridge near you and read your favourite quotes from this historic series.

22nd - Chinese New year, the year of the rabbit begins.

25th - Burns Night - this great poet is honoured annually in Scotland with a traditional dinner of haggis, neaps and tatties. Throw a dinner party where all guests must bring a pre-prepared ditty.

Fun Ideas to Enjoy in January

Although for some it may seem bleak and eons until pay day with limited funds after Christmas splurge, January can be enjoyed with an appreciation of the seasons

  • Keep your eyes open for signs of the first snowdrops

  • Do a big puzzle during the month, finding a few pieces that fit each day.

  • Stock up on winter treats, such as hot chocolate and enjoy pure decadence as you take time to read some chapters of a new book.

  • Try porridge with different toppings to keep you warm for the day.

  • Have a day of clutter clearing and organisation, especially as you take down the decorations. Rearrange the furniture to freshen up your spaces.

  • Wear red lipstick to combat the weather on dull days.
