How to store your digital photos

Creating Photo Albums

This is such a great January task. It is one of those items to add to the agenda for the month and potter at over several days.

Most of my photos are on my phone now. There are two reasons for this: firstly, the shutter lens is jammed on my DSLR, and secondly, my phone (Huawei Pro) takes superb images. Often it is the composition that is the main thought behind an image, and the triple phone camera does the rest.

Organising your photos at this time of year, not only gives you a sense of pride, but also frees up a lot of space on your phone.

How to store your digital photos

I have an external hard-drive for my laptop and I create a folder labelled ”2022 Photos” for example. I download all the photos from my phone during the date range. If I have some on my camera too, I will take them from the SD card.

Then I create a second folder labelled “2022 Photobook”. I drag all of the images that I want to print into this folder. I put them in month order. Once this is done, you are more than halfway there with the task. But as you can see, you can do this easily over several days. Some years I have set an early morning alarm and snuggled under a blanket on the couch doing this for an hour each morning before everyone else wakes up and the day really begins.

Printed photo albums

I use Photobox.ie to create my photo albums. I choose the same size album and cover colour (black) each year. They have great choices for yearbooks on their website - with cutouts for the date, for example.

The website is incredibly easy to navigate. Additionally, the layout options for the book are very flexible. I create my own layout and work page by page, selecting how many images to include, according to a particular event that happened at the time. You can then add text which is helpful for remembering things in future years.

My books usually end up with a lot of pages, but I think these are a real investment to keep and share for a lifetime. When we lived abroad, and far from both my husbands family and my own, I did a smaller photobook for each set of grandparents and great grandparents as their Christmas gift each year.

Once you get into the habit of doing this, you will build up a collection of organised memories whilst decluttering your phone and camera.
