LINEN - How to Wash Linen Sheets
Do you sleep in linen?
My French fellow yacht stewardess introduced me to linen sheets, saying that she would sleep in nothing else. I was smitten and the rest, as they say is ‘une belle histoire’.
Keep your linen bedsheets utterly gorgeous with these simple to follow instructions.
How to wash linen sheets
It is perfectly fine to wash your linen sheets in the washing machine. Use a gentle 40 degree cycle to preserve and enhance all their softness.
Don’t overfill the machine. Wash a large duvet cover by itself and use a separate cycle for the flat sheet and pillow cases.
Wash only like colours together.
Use a mild and gentle detergent, that doesn’t contain any whitening agents. Try Ecover or Woolite.
Don’t use any fabric softener. Linen is a natural fabric that softens over time. To maintain the natural strength of the fabric ensure that all products are washed out before drying.

- Tumble or line dry.
- Shake out and make the bed, or iron if you prefer.
How to Dry Linen Sheets
You can line dry or tumble dry linen sheets. Sometimes line drying can leave them a little stiff. To avoid this, you can tumble dry them for about 10 minutes before hanging on the line.
Linen sheets dry much quicker than cotton, so be observant with your machine settings.
Ironing Linen Sheets
The beauty of linen is that it looks equally good relaxed or ironed. Simply shaking out the sheets and putting them directly on your bed gives a wonderful natural look which we prefer.
However, if you work on a superyacht or prefer a smoother look, it is perfectly good to iron them
